One of the reasons I love that show is watching people think they're good because they can jam 120 notes into a single vocal run, none of which stays in the same key. If I want to hear good melisma, I'll stick to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or a cantor. But if I want bad melisma, at least I've got it during prime time two nights a week. He had SO much good stuff it was so hard to cut him off, and even harder to decide what gems of his to put in the interview. We could have probably talked for hours. How much time did you get with him? For more examples check out some of the opera from 1100-1600 AD that the pop culture of the time produced.
